Nico the Unicorn
With a disabled leg, a deceased father, and status as the new boy in a small Vermont town, 12-year-old Billy has the proverbial three strikes against him. But things start to turn around when his waitress mom (the saintly Anne Archer) allows him to keep a scraggly pony he rescus from a con artist. And when the pony gives birth to a unicorn, and a pretty local girl assists Billy with the birth, things seem to be seriously looking up. But some nasty classmates discover their secret and soon everyone from police on horseback to news helicopters to the armed charlatan are chasing Billy and Nico up into the mountains. This fairly tale for grade schoolers has some real suspense and a magical ending that isn’t too sentimental. Mom has a cop love interest (Michael Ontkean), but they keep it pretty tame. The mother pony does give her life to protect the foal; however, the carnage occurs off screen. This 95-minute film will most interest children 5 to 10 years of age, although tru horse/unicorn lovers up to age 13 may enjoy it as well. –Kimberly Heinrichs

Owd Bob
You’d have to be some sort of an ogre to go wrong with Owd Bob. If warm, old-fashioned dog flicks aren’t your thing, maybe stunning scenery is; green hills and azure seas don’t get much more gorgeous than on Ireland’s Celtic-breeze-whipped Isle of Man. Should neither of those appeal, though, it’s easy to settle for simple good acting. Babe’s James Cromwell stars as Adam McAdam, a grumpy old bugger who ticks away lonely days tending the farm alongside his champion sheepdog Zac. Then comes the day his orphaned American grandson, David, is dumped at his doorstep. McAdam, a pretty poor excuse for company, can’t keep David from befriending neighbor girl Maggie Moore. Bad blood between the Moores and the McAdams runs deep, but the conflict du jour centers around dogs–Owd Bob, Maggie’s pup, aims to put Zac to shame in the upcoming sheepherding tournament. Leading up to the contest, parallel story lines swirl around: Maggie’s mom is dying, and a crew of local cronies suspect Zac, who’s lately been spotted licking blood-stained chops, of being a sheep killer. While tensions between David and his grandfather escalate, David moves out, Maggie loses her mom, and the dogs do their stuff, with Zac coming out the victor. There’s still the matter of the sheep murders, though. In a dramatic pup frame-up, Owd Bob is the fall guy, and only old man McAdam can save him from being destroyed. It’s a sad ending for Zac, but one that allows McAdam’s well-buried love for his grandson to surface. Whatever propels you to spring for this film, break out the family-sized popcorn bowl. Owd Bob’s penchant for bringing folks together is as powerful in living rooms as it is onscreen. –Tammy La Gorce

This is a low-key gem that is at once about the power of dreams, the power of suggestion, and the tyranny of artistic vision (when there really isn’t one to fight for). This disarming comedy by director Alexandre Rockwell was a hit at the Sundance Festival but barely registered commercially. Steve Buscemi stars as a hard-luck case: Adolpho, a wanna-be filmmaker with a phone-book-sized screenplay and no money. He lives in a hellish Lower East Side apartment and has a thing for his standoffish neighbor (Jennifer Beals). When he places a want ad to sell his script, he lands Joe (Seymour Cassell), a would-be investor who, it turns out, is really a con artist. Together, they go looking for money to make the movie. A dizzily funny and understated film in which Cassell gives the performance of his career. –Marshall Fine

C Bear and Jamal, starring Tone Loc, the rapper who delivered the raucous, infectious tune Wild Thing to the masses in the early ’90s, is a Fat Albert for the new millennium, with a few key updates. For starters, Jamal’s gang isn’t strictly African American, though he is. Instead, the crew of wisecracking, street-smart kids he knocks around with includes an Asian girl, a Hispanic boy, and a few interracial-looking characters. Also new is the moral mentor’s incarnation: In place of a Bill Cosby-style narrator, this series has C Bear (played by the gravelly voiced Loc), a sarcastic stuffed bear who springs to life when no one else is around and steers Jamal in the right direction, not to mention keeps kids’ attention with loose, lighthearted, mostly memorable rap numbers. For instance, on the DVD’s nine episodes, C Bear helps Jamal conqur a case of class consciousness after a visit to his rich cousin, wear down a bully with words of kindness, recognize the sometimes painful consequnces of too much truth-telling, and get in touch with the benefits of being himself when making friends.

C Bear and Jamal’s messages are most accessible to kids 7-12; they’ll also appreciate the cartoon’s quirkily drawn characters (Jamal’s grandparents are especially well crafted) and offbeat, slang-heavy banter. Parents, on the other hand–especially parents who were Fat Albert fans as kids–will love the parallels to the old-school show and the constant good-conscience reinforcements. –Tammy La Gorce

Basically it’s about:
Two years after leaving the grungy cyberpunk calling card Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Shinya Tsukamoto reenters the world of flesh and metal metamorphoses with a more narratively ambitious film that is neither sequl nor remake, but a rethinking of the ideas on a bigger scale with more impressive effects. The film begins in the recognizable world of the thriller, where a young middle-class couples see their son kidnapped by mysterious hoodlums, and then takes an abrupt turn into an underworld of cybermen led by a mad scientist performing twisted experiments. The father (Tomoroh Taguchi, returning from the first film), filled with rage and shame at his powerlessness, suddenly transforms into a robotic warrior and becomes overwhelmed by the power, simultaneously terrified and ecstatic. Unlike in the original, Tsukamoto offers an explanation, for what it’s worth, but the power lies not in the story but the nightmarish imagery and the themes of the marriage of flesh and technology, metal and magic. With an ample budget at his disposal (not to mention color), Tsukamoto ups the conflict to a battle of biblical proportions while maintaining the brooding, terrifying, nightmarish quality. Tsukamoto’s gory, violent vision of technology run amok is not for everyone, but fans of David Lynch and David Cronenberg will find his dangerous visions just as creatively disturbing. –Sean Axmaker

Johnny Depp gets high off another acting challenge in this tricky adaptation of a Stephen King yarn. Although the mood is too sinister to allow for the mischief of his Pirates of the Caribbean turn, Depp still manages to embroider his role here with plenty of quirky business. He plays a writer, depressed and nearly divorced, who’s stuck in an isolated cabin (shades of The Shining) when a stranger (John Turturro) arrives, accusing him of plagiarism. Writer-director David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) does his best to make the rickety material compelling–he gets the maximum out of the cabin set, for instance–but the problems inherent in the King story eventually win out. The climactic scenes are particularly unpleasant, especially in contrast to the cleverness of Depp’s performance. A Philip Glass score adds class, but this one ultimately feels like a disappointment. –Robert Horton

Based on a popular Japanese comic strip, Hong Kong’s high-flying martial arts action hero Jackie Chan stars as private Ryu Saeba in City Hunter. Hired to find the runaway daughter of a Japanese publishing tycoon, Ryu’s first impulse is to turn the job down - until he sees a picture of the beautiful Shizuko (Kumiko Goto). Hot on her heels, Ryu tracks her down on board a cruise ship, and much to the annoyance of his jealous female sidekick Kaori (Joey Wong) the womanizing Ryu seems more interested in catching Shizuko’s attention than returning her safely to her father. However, Ryu’s romantic plans quickly go astray when a gang of ruthless criminals hijack the ship and hold the passengers to ransom. To save the day Jackie Chan’s uniqu action style reigns supreme in a series of brilliantly conceived fight sequnces as Ryu swings into action to dispatch the bad guys and rescu the goergeous Shizuko!
